Curriculum Intent
Horrington Primary School's vision is to provide a place of academic excellence rooted in the local community, empowering independent learners with transferable skills, strong morals and a responsibility for the local environment. To enable this, our curriculum is engaging and stimulating so that it ignites our children's curiosity and fascination about the world and equips them to be resilient, lifelong learners.
We provide creative experiences alongside key, age-related tools of learning in reading, writing and maths, equipping our children with a genuine love of learning, memories of a uniquely enjoyable learning experience, creative skill and social confidence. We build a sense of community, encouraging children to become respectful and articulate members of society. We support children to make sense of the world through investigation and to demonstrate responsibility to our environment and the wider world.
As a rural primary school in the heart of countryside, Horrington Primary School has the space and resources to offer a broad and varied range of opportunities to our children. We have a committed staff team who aim high in all curriculum subjects. We offer a rich and nurturing experience to all children through our curriculum and extra-curricular activities. As a school we strive for academic achievement for every child and intend for every member of our school community to experience success in all areas.
At the heart of our curriculum are two core concepts: High Quality Literature and Environment & Sustainability. These are visited regularly throughout the learning journey of our curriculum and provide a theme of relevant experiences, centred on the local area. These core concepts ensure our curriculum provides a learning journey that is engaging and pertinent to our children, and is unique to Horrington Primary School.
High Quality Literature
Running at the centre of our English learning are carefully chosen, high-quality and age appropriate texts. These are chosen to engage pupils with language-rich texts which complement some of the learning in our foundation subjects. The texts are chosen across a range of genres to ensure the children experience and develop an understanding of the vocabulary and features of a wide variety of styles of writing. Carefully choosing the texts to match learning in other areas of the wider curriculum allows teachers to maximise the potential for learning across as many subjects as possible. This thread is embedded throughout the whole school curriculum and in all aspects of learning.
Environment and Sustainability
As a school, we are blessed to find ourselves located on the edge of a city of huge historical significance, Wells, and also bordering the edge of outstandingly beautiful English countryside. We place great importance on the cultural capital that a child growing up in Wells should develop, but recognise that not all children have the same opportunities to explore and learn about their local area. Therefore, to ensure all children in our school understand the importance of the local history, it is included in as many aspects of our curriculum as is appropriate, from local Roman sites and the Anglo-Saxon legacy in Somerset to entertainment and leisure in the 20th century. Our school is situated in a beautiful and geographically interesting setting, and local resources of farmland, the historic city of Wells and neighbouring caves at Wookey Hole and the wonderful landscape are utilised at every opportunity.
Our staff are deeply committed to preparing children to be successful adults in an ever-changing and technologically advanced society. In all we do, we support pupils to aim high. We value and nurture their individuality and creativity, and aspire to equip them with the knowledge, self-discipline and confidence to succeed. Where there are barriers, we pride ourselves on embracing different approaches to secure high-quality learning and good progress for all. We strive to ensure that our curriculum offer equips every child with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful, both now and in the next phase of their learning.
