Teaching and Promoting British Values at Horrington
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister. At Horrington Primary School these values are reinforced regularly through assemblies, our School Council, our school’s values and whole school ethos as well as having a Focus British Value each term.
All 5 British Values are also interwoven within our Jigsaw PSHE programme. Attached is an overview of when and how these are covered during the year.
As well as teaching British Values through our Jigsaw PSHE Programme, we also ensure dedicated and focussed lessons are being taught for each specific British Value during the year.
We focus on:
Term | British Value |
Autumn 1 | Democracy |
Autumn 1 | Democracy |
Spring 1 | Rule of Law |
Spring 2 | Individual Liberty |
Summer 1 | Mutual Respect and Tolerance |
Summer 2 | Revisit all British Values |
We start the year in Autumn 1 & 2 by having an extra focus on Democracy so that the children are able to vote for their School Council Representatives and School Eco Council Representatives. Once the other British Values have been covered, we are then able to end the year in Summer 2 by consolidating each of the British Values and reflecting on how they have helped us.
